backup script

hi

i would like to make a backup script that finds out the differences between the source and destination and only copies the new/modified files from source to destination.

can anyone help me on this one or does anyone already have such a neat script?

You want rsync. Type man rsync for a description and examples.

ok 1 more question though:

if you do: rsync -a /src /dest
will rsync check which files are new/modified and only copy that files?
or will it just overwrite the existing files?

from the man page:

Quote:
The rsync remote-update protocol allows rsync to transfer just the differences between two
sets of files across the network connection, using an efficient checksum-search algorithm
described in the technical report that accompanies this package.
You should also check out the -z option which compresses the files if you are doing remote backups.
