Back up a Windows computer using Linux backup software

Hi there,

I feel this question must have been asked and answered a thousand times in different ways but I'm blowed if I can find an exact answer to my query.

I would like to be able to back-up a Windows installation including user files, settings, e-mail, program data etc... using a linux program.

I know I can mount the disk and just copy the files & folders, but I want more than that...

Ideally I would would like to have an application that selects all the relevant bits and does the backup to my chosen media in a similar way to Fabs Autobackup-2. I have found Fabs is great for this job on XP machines from a Windows PE environment, but does not do Vista or Windows 7.

This imaginary software would also have an easy to use "Restore" button, which could then repopulate a users profile once I had completed my work on their computer, for example following completion of a windows re-build.

I'm sure someone else has thought of this, but I cannot find the solution anywhere. Does anyone here have any thoughts or suggestions?

Many Thanks

JB

Windows 7 has a backup that may be one of the better choices. It creates a virtual drive image and is one of the fastest ways to backup. It is also a live state backup so you can backup while using windows. To return an image you can boot to almost any windows 7 dvd/usb to recover your system.

Second to that may be a rsync for windows.

There are many windows apps too like robocopy (I forget the new version name) and some automated one touch backups.
