One way to check your port is to go to a site like 'shields up' . I'm not sure if that NAT test in Azureus is 100% reliable.
If the port you have chosen is closed and it is open in the linux (software) firewall suspect a router problem. Most routers have a plug-n-play option. Is this enabled in both Azureus and the router? This would probably be the quickest way to get it running.
I dislike PNP and prefer to set my router manually. The router manual should show how to do this. One thing I've noticed with my D-link router is the port used by bittorrent will shut down every so often, forcing me to do a reset. This is with a very cheap router so most people probably don't experience this problem. My uneducated guess is the router gets overwhelmed by the number of connections.
