avi to vcd

i am using the script below to generate video cd's which play on my dvd player from an avi file. just save the script as vcd. chmod 755 vcd and enter:
./vcd filename

this works great for avi files which i have taken with my canon sd100 camera, however it does not work for any other avi files that i already have. is there a catchall for
ffmpeg so that whatever codec the file is, it will be transformed into a vcd compliant mpeg?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#!/bin/bash
#
# Burn a data cd
TMPFILE=/tmp/gkvcd
if test -f $TMPFILE
then
echo "Another VCD is currently being produced"
exit 0
fi
trap 'rm $TMPFILE;exit 0' 0
echo $$ > $TMPFILE

FNAME="$1"

clear

echo "Converting $FNAME.avi to $FNAME.mpg"
ffmpeg -i $FNAME.avi -me full -title $FNAME -r 29.97 -s 352X240 -ab 224 -ar 44100 -b 1150 -f vcd -vcodec mpeg1video -acodec mp2 $FNAME.mpg

echo "Creating the VCD image for $FNAME.mpg"
vcdimager -t vcd2 -c $FNAME.cue -b $FNAME.bin -l $FNAME $FNAME.mpg

echo "Blanking the CDRW"
cdrdao blank --device 0,0,0

echo "Burning the VCD of $FNAME using cdrdao"
cdrdao write -v 2 --speed 4 --device 0,0,0 --driver generic-mmc --eject $FNAME.cue

echo "ALL DONE - CD is ready to be played on a DVD player."

rm *.bin *.cue
