Avi -> MPEG


Looking for a program which can convert avi to MPEG (for linux ofcourse ). Anyone?

what kind of avis? many avis contain mpeg video streams in the first place, so somethign like mplayer can easiloy just strip out the mpeg track for you. you could also use mplayer to strip and decode the video using something like "mplayer -vo yuv2mpeg" and then use the mjpegtools package's mpeg2enc to pick a certain mpeg standard to encode to from the yuv dump that mplayer will leave you with.

I'm talking about DivX-avis if there are such.

Do you know if this is possible to do in xine? MPlayer had a VERY long list of dependencies which I'd rather not install...

no, xine is crap, mplayer is good.

If you want a gui you can try avidemux.Is a little rough around the edges and under constant development but the only gui - tool for Linux and avi's that I know about.
There is also kmemcoder.It's a graphical frontend for memcoder that has limited capabilities compared to commandline.Never tried that with mpg.
