AVI's for RedHat9

I have never tried playing media files such as mp3s or AVI's on my linux machine, But lately I have gotten some AVI's that I want to check out but the built in media player will not play them. They are mp4 encoded so I am guessing that I need a divx codec. Or if all else fails a cdburning program that will burn them as avi's that windows will see, xcdroast will only let me do them as iso's. Thanks in advance!

I don't know what packages you've got, but if you're trying to play mp3s and avis then I'd recommend you check/install the following rpms:

mplayer (for avis)
xmms and the xmms-mp3 (for mp3s)

These should be on your installation cds, apart from the xmms-mp3 rpm, which you'll have to get from freshrpms or somewhere. There are also other rpms you can get to add support for things like quicktime to mplayer, a quick google, or browse through freshrpms, should enable you to find them.

To check what packages you have installed:
rpm -qa
or to search for rpms:
rpm -qa | grep [string to search for]

Divx actually released a linux port of the codec and player, I have not actually tried it but you may need it if the avi's are divx, unless mplayer has a divx codec.

Also, ISOs are the images of a whole CD. You can take those ISOs and burn them and they will burn the files you said when you made the ISO because it is just a archie of files inside of one file. if it is burning everything with a .iso extension on the cd, then I'm just confused.

actually it won't burn anything that doesn't have an iso extention. I have tried installing mplayer but I get dependancy errors saying it needs mplayer common, but mplayercommon won't install because it needs mplayer(?)... and both crap out when I do the no deps switch....should I just force them?

You could try forcing them. I'm using the latest versions from freshrpms and don't need mplayer-common installed at all. Are you using the latest versions, or those that came on your cd? Might simplify things to use upto date ones if your not.

If you get really hacked off and you want a bit of a cop-out solution you could just install apt http://freshrpms.net/apt/ which should sort you out and provide a quick-n-easy way to keep you upto date in the future. I use it cuz I'm lazy
