automatic update

I am just wondering if there is such thing as automatic update for windows. I mean by the power of linux, I now there is a way to download the Microsoft Windows' updates and redirect it to the clients. Sort of a backward engineering wherein it is possible for clients not to download updates in Microsofts' website cause some workstations do not have access to the internet but they can access a certain server where it will be the one to update windows' clients. Funny isn't but I am just thinking of this. In this way this is a kickass for windows because linux will be the medium to send out this updates to the clients.

I think Microsoft doesn't let you do that. They already shut down one download place of Windows update (or was it MS update?) because it was cracked, and I think they'll want to keep the control at their own hands. That's why you can't run Windows Update with any other browser than Explorer only; it's the Microsoft Way.

If you find a (legal) way, tell us about it, but I suspect it can't be done, either easily or legally or neither way. If Microsoft used a public reposity for the updates it might be possible, but they are using a somehow closed system for it, for their own reasons.

Of course there are automatic update facilities for Windows. Did you seriously think Fortune 100 companies with thousands of desktops want each one getting updates directly from the Microsoft's servers? No way!

However, not being a Windows administrator, I don't actually know anything about the available automated update systems. Here's a [url=http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1778]three-part SecurityFocus article on the various options[/link] if you feel like reading it. I doubt any of them use Linux, but I'm not sure why it would matter.
