Automatic login

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi all,

First I must admit that I'm pretty new with Linux, so some of my terms may look odd to some of you.

I'm using a 2.4.26 Linux kernel and a Linux distribution as an operating system for a controller.

I developed a software to run over the controller and to perform some activities with the controller resources.

During the development session I operated the Linux on the controller from my PC using a serial emulator (getty) and logged-on as root.

Now I want to distribute the controller and it need to be able to login in automatically and to run the software that I wrote as soon as the operating system boot is done.
I other words: the controller should not be connected to any keyboard/screen and still need to be able to login (without prompting) and run my software right after boot.

1. How to enable automatic login (as root?, as other user?) ?
2. How to set my software to run as soon as the boot is done?

Thanks!

You do not need to login to have the software started. You can make it start in the background when the system boots. This is done with all the servers like web-server, mysql server,mail-server, etc.
But this is a distro-specific question. So it depends of what distro u are using. There are no instructions that work with all distros.
