autofs won't stop.....

I am having trouble with autofs. It appears to start, but I can't stop the service using the rc scripts.

Eg:

hankeytux root # /etc/init.d/autofs status
* status: stopped
hankeytux root # /etc/init.d/autofs start
* Starting automounter...
/.autofs [ ok ]
hankeytux root # /etc/init.d/autofs stop
* Stopping automounter... [ !! ]

hankeytux root # /etc/init.d/autofs status
* status: started
hankeytux root #

Why won't it shut down properly? It doesn't work either but thats another story...

Anyway /var/log/messages contains this:

Jun 15 19:43:53 hankeytux automount[1691]: starting automounter version 3.1.7, path = /.autofs, maptype = yp, mapname = auto.misc
Jun 15 19:43:53 hankeytux automount[1691]: Map argc = 1
Jun 15 19:43:53 hankeytux automount[1691]: Map argv[0] = auto.misc
Jun 15 19:43:53 hankeytux automount[1691]: lookup(yp): map auto.misc: local domain name not set

Does the local domain name need to be set? How would I do this? I have a 'dnsdomainname' file in /etc as per installation instructions, and the runlevel 'domainname' script enabled.

All help appreciated

Lindsay

P.s. Distribution is Gentoo...
