autofs won't start at boot time in Ubuntu

autofs won't start when my system boots. I can run the script manually to start it and everything works fine. I've got the symbolic link in /etc/rc2.d to invoke /etc/init.d/autofs but after boot I can't "cd" to the directory I've got defined in /etc/auto.master. If I manually invoke /etc/init.d/autofs then I can "cd" to the directory. Any thoughts?

Not sure where the log file is at in ubuntu but I know rhel logs boot time startup messages to boot.log in /var/log/ it should be in a similar location and you should be able to review that and verify if it is starting correctly.

Try this and restart autofs

Code:
/etc/default/autofs
LOGGING="verbose"
