Audio stutter

After a day of use, installations and fun in Linux the LINE IN loopthrough on my Audigy 2 card started to stutter heavily. Playback of sound from Linux was still functional.

I restarted my entire system and naturally this helped, but next time i'd rather not. Any idea why this happens? Can i close all audio activity (both in gnome and in ALSA) and restart these without system shutdown? Even without X shutdown?

You can restart alsa with the command:
service alsa force-restart

You need to be root to execute the 'service' command.

strange... i don't even think there is an "alsa" service in slackware's setup

you can try doing rmmod modulenames to remove the audio modules (granted they are compiled as modules) and then doing modprobe top-level-module, so that all the dependencies will automatically be insmod-ed

check if dmesg shows any output about this problem... are you using 2.6.x kernel with alsa builtin or 2.4.x with alsa built outside?
