Audio player with dynamic range compressor
I'd like to use an audio player which can do dynamic range compression. That is to say, loud content is attenuated, and soft content is amplified. This is very useful when listening to content with lots of dynamic range (i.e. poor quality home recordings, classical music, etc.), especially if the listening environment is noisy. A proper dynamic range compressor works in the background, on-the-fly adjusting the "volume" continuously without any user intervention, and without being noticed. Also, a proper dynamic range compressor is not source-centric, that is, it works on any audio format supported by the player (mp3, ogg, flac, etc.)
There is a plugin for XMMS which does this (Kompressor Crush), but XMMS is getting a bit long in the tooth these days... When possible, I prefer to avoid kde-centric or gnome-centric solutions too : ) Are there any suggestions for other good options?
Thanks in advance.
