Hey,

Now before people start complaining, i realise that this thread is very similar to others that have been posted. However the majority of those are very old and dont really answer all my questions.
Basically at the moment i have a Roland RS synth that i connect to my PC via the audio-in on my laptop. I then use Acid Pro as my syquencer cos i like the looped based programming. Is it possible to get a similar set up on linux and if so how?? Acid eats my processor like its a bacon sarny, so ideally i'd like something that doesn't make my laptop hotter than the sun. Any help is very much appreciated (i've already tryed planet CCRMA which doesnt work!!)

i guess we need to know what was the problem point using planet CCRMA

Basically from what i can construe, planet CCRMA is a preemption kernel and my wireless card driver doesnt support this, so i can use the kernel without the internet. (initially the soundcard wouldnt work but i've sorted this!!) What exactly is the advantage of music production on this kernel, and since you seem to be the authority on this matter foo_bar_foo, what software do you suggest?? I've managed to get lmms working. Thanks in advance

sometimes i'm quite behind the current trends and my knowledge is quite limited.
basically the preemptive aspect to the kernel has nothing to do with the wireless card. you just need to figure out what the wireless card is and install its driver.
i would stick with planet CCRMA for now.
the kernel is tweeked but is basically like all other kernels.
the extra things enable interaction for music programs in realtime and syncing of sequencers in realtime using high res time ticks. preemption makes the GUI responsive for accuracy and control. realtime scheduling in Linux kernel is a higher priority scheduling algorithm so music programms don't have to take a number and wait their turn. low sound latency is so when you play your keyboard the sound plays from the sequencer without a delay even if you use a software synthesizer. might have memory locking for better sound i/o. and like that.
what software is kind of personal preference.
i run the jack sound server with qjackctl
i personally like muse for sequencing
i use ardour for recording both from outside sources and other programs (like looping muse) ardour seems to have very high sound quality
i use jamin for mixing and mastering. (it's a great program)
and what little i have messed with drum machine i used hydrogen.
never tried lmms yet.

i got midi in/out working through the gameport of my soundcard (cheapo sb live)
card and i use sb midi soundfonts as well as timiditity and both work well.

another thread here or in hardware and people can help with the wireless card.

Cheers for that foo_bar_foo. Cleared some things up. Unfortunately, the wireless card won't work with the kernel. I have it working flawlessly with other 2.6 kernels, but the driver causes a hang when run with the preemptive kernel. I've contacted the developer of the Planet kernel and he says that it won't work with the driver. Basically, i need a driver that will work with this particular kernel
Anyhow, i want to use the sounds on my synth not on the computer programmes, is this possible? Cheers,
