Audacity Ubuntu Uhhhhh!

I'm running Ubuntu 7.1.0 and wish to run Audacity.
At one time I had and older version of Audacity which worked well.

Sometimes the upgrade urge should be suppressed. The new version of Audacity 1.3.4 beta, installed with Synaptic runs very slowly. Maybe 8 secs passes after selection something from a menu and the appearance of another window.
I can record (through a USB lexicon alpha) but can't play back through the sound card. Can play back through the Alpha.

I tried every possible combination in the preferences to get the sound card. There is an 8 second delay trying to access the preferences panel. In addition, while recording one track works, trying to record a second track produces a terrible noise independent from my guitar playing.

Anyway, looks like the Ubuntu package install is dodgy so I thought, best to compile Audacity from source.

Rather than go with the beta I thought the older version Audacity 1.2.6 would be a good bet since I was happy with the old version. Audacity 1.2.6 source compile requires WxWidgets 2.4 and no later will do and I can't find the older wxWidgets source anywhere.

Okay I thought, I'lll try compiling the Audacity beta

After installing various dependencies the compile crashes

g++ -c -I../lib-src/portmixer/include -I../lib-src/portaudio-v19/include -g -O2 -I../lib-src/libresample/include -I../lib-src/libnyquist/nyx -I../lib-src/libvamp -I../lib-src/allegro -I../lib-src/FileDialog -Wall -fno-strict-aliasing -I./include -I. -I/usr/local/lib/wx/include/gtk2-ansi-release-2.8 -I/usr/local/include/wx-2.8 -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_LARGE_FILES -D__WXGTK__ -pthread -DAUDACITY_DLL_API='' import/ImportMP3.cpp -o import/ImportMP3.o
import/ImportMP3.cpp: In function ‘void GetMP3ImportPlugin(ImportPluginList*, UnusableImportPluginList*)’:
import/ImportMP3.cpp:52: error: ‘DESC’ was not declared in this scope
import/ImportMP3.cpp:52: error: ‘wxSIZEOF’ was not declared in this scope

If someone knows how to cure this then fantastic.

If someone knows the location of wxWidgets 2.4 that would be good too

or if someone knows how to cure the Ubuntu installation or knows how to back up to the old Ubuntu Audacity version then thanking you in advance please offer you suggestions.

Have you installed the build-essentials package?

Maybe your problem is that you are running a beta version. Have you tried installing a stable package from audacity.sourceforge.org? (it should say "latest stable version")

Yeah there's that too. You should always expect some problem(s) when using beta software.

Yes the problem is that it is a beta version.

The trouble is that when you upgrade its always a bit of a trick to roll a piece of software back, especiually if associated libraries have also been upgraded..

I can run Synaptic, is there a trick to get synaptic to roll back to an old version of Audacity?
