in audacity can you choose a different device other than oss which is /dev/dsp
if so that would be native alsa device and should be better.
you might have to match quality settings to avoid conversions for native alsa to work.
next try different settings in the quality tab under preferences if you have to use /dev/dsp.
also you can try some different settings in your .asoundrc file

Changing the device to native alsa as you suggested did the trick! Thank you, studioj!! That had been a show stopper with my new Mandriva 2007 installation. Back in the saddle again!
