I'm running Ubuntu Studio 9.10 64-bit, and have a problem with Audacity version 1.3.9. My sound card is a Sound Blaster Live Value.
Whenever I highlight a region of an audio file and select Play, the playback skips through the first few of seconds of the selection, (mostly) replacing them with a burst of staticky noise. I can hear very brief snippets of the correct audo underneath the static. It skips through this section far faster than real-time - i.e., it skips to say, the 10-second mark after only 2 or 3 seconds of noise. If I play the selected area in a loop, the noise and skipping only happen the first time through. The second and subsequent passes are fine.
Needless to say, this makes precise audio editing much more difficult. I've tried Googling it, and haven't seen any reports of similar problems from anyone else. Anybody know what might be going on, or ever seen this happen to someone othe than me?
Peacedog's suggestion did the trick! Changing my playback device (Edit - Preferences - Devices - Playback) from Default to almost anything else works fine. I'm usually using one of the SB Live Value! options from the top of the list, and they all seem to work the same.
