ATI Radeon AIW Tv Tuner Install Questions

Subject: Mandrake 8.2 > RedHat 7.3 > ATI AIW Radeon > Gatos Tv Tuner Install:
I'm trying to install the Gatos drivers/software for the ATI2 project so I can get the tv tuner and video capture to work.I've downloaded the following files:
ATI-4.2.0-15.i386.tar.gz
avview-0.10.8.tar.gz
drm-kernel-1.2.0-15.tar.gz
km-0.2.1.tgz
ffmpeg-snapshot-avview-0.10.8.tar.gz

Soyo K7V Dragon Plus
Athlon XP1500+
ATI 32mb Radeon All IN Wonder 4x AGP Video Card
Audigy Platinum Sound Card and Drive

I have no experience compiling Linux kernels.I have minimal experience with FreeBSD 4.5 where I successfully followed DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS to install sound suport for a SoundBlaster sound card on another computer.I've tried following the instructions and links from the http://gatos.sourceforge.net site. These instructions assume some experience with installing drivers/software and compiling in Linux.
I need step by step instructions, what order these files get installed, what configuration files need to be edited, the differences between Mandrake 8.2 and RedHat 7.3 > I know they store some configuration files in different places.
I have not found the type of instructions I need. Can anyone help? Once I'm able to do this successfully then I'll have a much better understanding in how to do things in Linux.

I installed the Gatos rpm from the CD #2 and a library rpm that was needed.I then extracted the ffmpeg,ati2,avview files to the /usr directory and installed them. AVView now runs from the command line.Tuner works fine but I'm not getting any audio.I have the Audigy Platinum sound card.CD player & XMMS work fine. Any ideas as to why the sound isn't working with AvView?

Problem Solved!

Got the sound working! Found a post from a google search > on the mixer set the Line in to Record. Now I can here AVView thru my stereo just like everything else. Now I'm a happy camper! Too bad it took me so much time to figure this out. Another Linux lesson learned!

Tuzinor,

I have a Rage 128 pro, and have gotten Avview to read my inputs [PS2] but I am not getting sound. I have RedHat 8.0 and not sure how much I want to go messing with the ALSA drivers....I have downloaded the driver tar from their site, but don't understand the setup, and dont want to rush into it without knowing what Im doing (dont want to lose my sound just yet ;-)) Anyways, can you help me maybe get the sound working? I run the sound out through my stereo, same way it sounds you do.....Thanks for any help from anyone...

I don't have Alsa sound with RedHat 8.0. My Audigy sound card works fine.

To get audio from avview > in your audio mixer > check the box for record for your line in. Then click in the avview window > use your right arrow key to increase the volume > you should see a blue graph moving on the screen as you increase the volume.

Below is what I posted recently to get Avview working with RedHat:

RedHat 8.0 Avview Install Instructions:

With Mandrake it's easier.
For RedHat this is what I do:
Gatos.sourceforge.net
You need ATI2-4.20.15 tar file, ffmpeg tar file,
drm-kernel tar file & Avview tar file.

Create a symlink between /etc/X11 & /usr/X11R6:
ln -s /etc/X11 /usr/X11R6

Copy ATI2 file to /usr directory.
Terminal: cd /usr
tar zxvf ATI-4.2.0-15.i386.tar.gz > this will replace files in the /usr/X11R6 directory.
If you use ARK to unzip > will not work. ATI file needs to replcae some files.
I use ARK for the rest.

ARK > Extract ffmpeg to /usr.
Terminal: cd/usr/ffmpeg
./configure
make
make install

ARK > Extract drm-kernel to usr/src
Terminal: cd/usr/src/drm-kernel
"make -f Makefile.linux" (no quote marks)
make install

ARK > extract avview to /usr
Terminal: /cd /usr/avview-0.10.8
./configure --with-ffmpeg=/usr/ffmpeg
make
make install

I then create a desktop shortcut to application for avview >
"execute path" > browse to "/usr/local/bin/start_avview" > that is the command to start avview

I reboot > dbl click the avview icon > click ok when the "first time" box pops up and then select video device parameters and other settings to run tuner configuration. For audio you have to click inside the screen area and use your right/left arrow buttons. In your audio mixer > you must select record for one of the line ins.

OK, well I tried selecting all of my line in's for record through Kmix, and none of them resulted in sound while trying to play my PS2 through Avview....and it still said in the configure that it requires ALSA .9.x.... I guess my sound card isnt supported then....

Don't know if it would make a difference > I use Gmix > I copied the file from Mandrake > and placed in the /usr/bin directory for RedHat. Will look into it later when I boot into RedHat again.
