ATI-GLX Problems

when I start unreal tournament 2003, I get the following on a terminal:

open /dev/dsp: no such device
Couldn't set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual

Also, programs such as warcraft and starcraft don't work properly (pretty sure it's a graphics problem however it may be cedega)

Either way, I have a Radeon 9600. I've downloaded and installed the latest ati driver. I'm working with the 2.6.8.1 kernel, because the ati driver in 2.6.9 just made a big mess with my system. I've also selected the ATi Radeon support in character devices in the kernel. However, I'm still getting the errors.
