Assistance needed

Hello all;

I am new to Linux, have been doing networking for over fifteen years, I have installed Red Hat Linux 6.1 and can not do a thing with it, but just look at it, I do not have an extra 3500 dollars for the courses Red Hat offers, my goal is to use the Linux server to connect to covad, I do not know how to activate the firewall, I do not know how to do routing, I do not know how to activate apache web server.

My intent is to setup up a Linux server to interface the Internet and a local intranet, how difficult is it to set up routing. How difficult is it to setup the firewall. In addition twenty friends want me to host their domain, I have no idea on how to set up virtual hosts.

How do I obtain this information?

Red Hat 6.1? That is a very old version of RedHat - things have become a lot easier since then. I would have to suggest you grab Fedora FC2 or 1 - that is the latest fre version of RedHat.

Also, read RUTE - this is an excellent online book covering a huge amount of Linux knowledge.

And welcome to LQ :D

When I tried out FC2, there was a menu that let you start, stop, and restart any service you needed to. I'm pretty sure Apache was there. Are you trying to have this single computer be your router/firewall for your network? If so, then I'm not sure how much I myself can help you. Have you searched RedHat's forums? Do they still HAVE forums there? The last time I checked that stuff out was back when RH7.3 was released. If they have their forums still up and running, I suggest that you search throughout there. I don't mean to be rude, but I've gotten the impression that most of the members here use Slackware. If you search throughout RH's forums, you might find some answers to your questions that are RedHat specific.

Good luck!
