arrow symbols (<->) with latex?

I read up in "LATEX users guide and reference manual" (leslie Lamport) and "The LATEX companion" but could not get these (<--, --->, <---->, >, or <) arrow symbols in my dvi file.

I also tried to do usepackage{asmsymbo} and latexsym but in vain. There is no error message which is okay, since these packages (sty files) are on my system.

The books say that "<" and ">" should go without need of any special package but my dvi file shows "!" and "?" (both turned upside down).

Furthermore, I tried and found that greek alphabets are also not visible. Maybe the problems are linked with each other. I think for greek alphabets normally no extra package is needed, or am I missing something?

Can anyone help me with this, please. I need to submit my report tomorrow.

thanks a lot ppl,

Sounds like a character set problem... are you entering the data on one computer (or distro, seeing as you list multiple) and trying to view it on another? They might be set to use different character sets.

arrrggg.... I seem to be very tired :)

it was just that I had to enclose these symbols in $s.

Actually, I never need to write any mthematical formular with latex. These symbols are require to be used as in formulas.

anyone of the followings work:

$ formula $
\( formula \)
\begin{math} formula \end{math}

thanks player anyhow
