Arping and Libnet returning error. Install problem?
I'm trying to setup *url* habets.pp.se/synscan/programs.php?prog=arping Arping version 2.05, with dependencies of Libpcap and Libnet 1.1.2.1. I think that I installed everything right, but when I try to run Arping it returns an error "arping: error while loading shared libraries: libnet.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". Has anyone used this that could tell me where this libnet.so.1 should be?
I tried reinstalling all three, same problem. Linspire 5.0.229, Debian-based GregW040 sorry about the non-linked url at the top. It wouldn't let me. |
SimplyMEPIS 3.3.2, also Debian-based, no problem.
I used KPackage, what did you use? I suspect this may be a CNR problem, or maybe repositories. |
I used ./configure in the konsole window, followed by cd-ing to the directory, then make and make install. Is the libnet.so.1 specific to the build, or is it the same with all installs, I wonder. Do I need to use CNR for the installs to make it work right?

As I said before, I use SimplyMEPIS 3.3.2 which also is Debian-based, so I know how APT & .deb's & repositories & KPackage work. I have almost no direct experience w/ Linspire, but have read about it a fair amount as a possible standard recommendation to "Winders" converts here in Houston. Because the Debian system is so easy, I almost never touch tarball installs (the proverbial 11-foot pole comes to mind).
Why did you try to install arping the way you did? Did an install through CNR fail? When you are using a Debian-based system, you should always try its packages & repos first. "It just works!"(tm;)) If you haven't learned how to use APT :) (or the GUI based KPackage :D & Synaptic ), learn. In Linspire, also learn CNR. If you already know how, please don't take offense @ this suggestion. |
