I am trying to install ivtv 4.1 from a tarball and I get a fatal error message before it even starts good. The readme says use make, then make install.

What gets me is that last month, ivtv installed perfectly without a glitch. The only thing that has changed since then is I downloaded some updates for Mandriva 2006. Are not the updates backwards compatable with older versons of the same files?

Does the /lib/modules/2.6.12-12mdksmp/build directory exist? If you type uname -r does it output 2.6.12-12mdksmp or some different version?

Thanks for the reply.

When I type uname -r, it shows I have 2.6.12-12mdksmp, the same version I had before I downloaded the updates:

bash-3.00$ uname -r
2.6.12-12mdksmp
bash-3.00$




And the build directory does not exist where running make says it should.

I am at a permanent dead end unless someone is kind enough to show me the way.

You need the kernel source or headers installed depending on which the driver needs/Mandriva provides for building kernel modules. I would suggest searching your packages as to which is available and install.

The /lib/modules/<version-number>/build directory is almost always a symlink to the kernel source that is traditionaly stored in /usr/src.

If you have the kernel source then just create the link, if not install the mandrake kernel source package for the version of the kernel you have.

After I did a clean install of Mandriva a couple of weeks ago, I inadvertently installed the wrong version of the kernel source. I installed 2.6-2.6.12-14mdk when it should have been 2.6-2.6.12-12mdk. The kernel version number and the source version number must match perfectly.

Allow me to thank jtshaw and HappyTux for guiding me in the right direction. I usually try to get help from the Google search engine or from the Docs and readme's before I post here. Whenever I post here, know that I have exhausted myself of all of my resources elsewhere.
