Are glibc libraries forward compatible ?

I recently updated to gtk2.6+ and for this I had to update the glibc package also. The after effect of this was that quite a bit of applications stopped working ! Gaim, firefox, xmms to name a few.. They started working once i reinstalled them (the same versions !!)

Now why is this happening ? Is this the expected behaviour when libraries are updated ?

I've heard of other people having problems with this as well. I reccomend upgrading the applications that don't work.

I have done that... and the applications do start working. What was funny is that in some cases i just reinstalled the same version once more thats all !! So that means it works with the latest library as well ( but they refuse to work after the libraries get updated !!! )
Is this an application problem or the library problem ?

Did you use ldconfig after upgrading the libraries?
