Unhappy configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check

I am running slackware 8.1 and have been trying for a while to install ardour, however, it fails to configure properly. I get the following messeges:

configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
configure: error: /bin/sh './configure' failed for sigc++
configure: error: /bin/sh './configure' failed for libs
#

Please tell me what these error messeges mean and what i can do to eliminate them.

I've got a similar problem running Red Hat 9. Configure fails for libs as well and for another which I can't recall right now (I will check it and post again).

If I find a solution I will tell you but if someone can help us both will be great!!!

Have you (both of you) the C-compiler (gcc) installed? Try typing
gcc -v
in a terminal window. You should get a version number of the compiler. Otherwise you need to install it.

im trying to remember, i believe gcc -v returned something about POSIX thread something or other and GCC 3.3.1
my distro came with gcc 2.95.something, so i upgraded to 3.3.1, so i assume everything is there and working correctly
