archiving e-mails and messages

What options does Linux have for archiving letters--both e-mail and messages sent using websites (i.e., social networking?) I like saving my letters and conversations. Preferably as plain text whenever possible.

There are probably better ways but one option would be using pop (eg. with Thunderbird) which will store all your emails locally.
