apt-get update from a VM

Hello everyone,

in order to solve a problem I have with a tool named Vagrant (http://www.vagrantup.com), I really need some help.

I tried to update some guest additions in a Vagrant-based virtualmachine (Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal). That fails (both ways, on the host machine as well as on the guest).

I get the following output out of "sudo apt-get update" (from within the guest, connected via SSH, which totally works):

Code:
lukash@moritz:~/vagrant_test$ vagrant ssh
Welcome to Ubuntu 11.04 (GNU/Linux 2.6.38-8-generic-pae i686)

 * Documentation:  https://help.ubuntu.com/

vagrant@natty:~$ sudo aptitude update
Err http://us.archive.ubuntu.com natty InRelease

Err http://security.ubuntu.com natty-security InRelease

Err http://us.archive.ubuntu.com natty-updates InRelease

Err http://security.ubuntu.com natty-security Release.gpg
  Temporary failure resolving 'security.ubuntu.com'
Err http://us.archive.ubuntu.com natty Release.gpg
  Temporary failure resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com'
Err http://us.archive.ubuntu.com natty-updates Release.gpg
  Temporary failure resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com'
Some help would be a great thing!

If you don't have all the information you need to give some advice, please ask me for it - I'm not yet an experienced programmer, though I'm really working hard on getting better .

Can you ping from the guest? Is there no internet connection at all?

And is that April 2011 (11.04) release still supported?

Umm, I cannot ping from the guest, yes. I don't know if that release is still supported, since there's already 13.04 (? as I think) I don't think so though.

It's kind of strange - I did not change anything within the vagrant config (or my computer's or OS' config), though it worked after going for a rebuild out of the vagrant box from scratch. Now, since the Ubuntu box (which is pre-packed so to say) does seemingly not contain any GUI (like Gnome), so I tried installing Gnome manually by apt-get command (after doing apt-get update within the VM, which worked) - now I get the same code output as above. I don't get that, since things like apt-get update or install seem to work pretty much random?

Oh well, guess I found the problem. If you are going for host-only network, there is a static IP necessary. I did not assign any, though this is ofcourse a necessary thing.

Thanks for your help! :-)
