apt-get config with proxies

hello, i have ubuntu (which is debian based) running on a school network which has a proxy server. I have managed to configure Firefox and the system proxy to the proxy server address so i have internet access. However Apt-Get doesnt work. It pauses after i execute the apt-get command and it displays the address of the repository.

My question is: why isnt apt-get working? is it because apt-get has not been configured correctly. If so, how do i reconfigure it.

Also, what port does apt get mostly use as this network blocks many ports for security reasons.
