Apt-get and synaptic problem

When i try to install something using apt-get or Synaptic, i get this error:

Code:
Preconfiguring packages ...
dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 10608 package `python-pyorbit':
field name `!' must be followed by colon
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
ibs@ubuntu:~ $
This happens to every package i try to install. I'm a newbie to Linux so i can't figure this out myself.

Can you post that part from that file. There's an error in it maybe you can just edit the file.

Ok here is a part from the /var/lib/dpkg/status file, line 10608 is where it says: ! objects.

Code:
Package: python-pyorbit
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: python
Installed-Size: 48
Maintainer: Sebastien Bacher <seb128@debian.org>
Architecture: all
Source: pyorbit
Version: 2.0.1-0ubuntu1
Depends: python2.3-pyorbit, python (>= 2.3), python (<< 2.4)
Description: A Python language binding for the ORBit2 CORBA implementation
It aims to take advantage of new features found in ORBit2 to make
language bindings more efficient. This includes:
   - Use of ORBit2 type libraries to generate stubs
   - use of the ORBit_small_invoke_stub() call for operation
invocation, which allows for short circuited invocation on local
! objects. ##THIS IS LINE 10608
 .
Where it makes sense, this binding tries to stay compatible with the
Python language mapping, which can be found on the OMG web site:
     http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?formal/02-09-07
 .
This package is a dependency package, which select the right package
 for the default Python version.

That's really bizarre. Do you have unofficial repositories in your /etc/apt/sources.list? Are you running Debian or some type of hybrid distro?
