Apt errors in ubuntu

Hi, I'm running ubuntu minimal (6.06) and for some reason I just started getting errors while running apt:

Code:
root@vps:/var/www# apt-get install php5-mysql
Segmentation faultsts... 0%
root@vps:/var/www# apt-get update
FATAL -> Failed to fork.
root@vps:/var/www# apt-get upgrade
Segmentation faultsts... 0%

can anyone help?
Thanks!

As Apt is usually pretty stable, I'd be interested in know what happened prior to this problem. Disk failure or corruption? Power supply problems and/or machine shutting down abruptly?

Take a look at /var/lib/dpkg/status. This is the file that contains which packages you have installed. If that becomes corrupt it is possible to produce this symptom.
