apt-cache version check

i want to see if i can upgrade to a later version of gnumeric using apt.

this command shows it is available:
>apt-cache search gnumeric
gnumeric - Spreadsheet Application
koffice-spreadsheet - A spreadsheet for KDE
perl-Spreadsheet-WriteExcel - This Module can be Used to Create Excel Binary Files

but it doesn't show the version.
how do i tell if the version there is later than the version i already have?

I too would like something that would be in there as well. Until then, I've always used apt-cache showpkg <pkg_name>

Now I feel all left out:

apt-get install apt-show-versions
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package apt-show-versions

But now that I know what to look for, I'll try to find an RPM of it.
