apt and compiling from source not working well together?

I'm trying to compile SDL libraries needed for the battle for wesnoth. These libraries aren't in the debian apt list so I compile them from source. The SDL stuff needs some other libraries to work for example libpng so I apt libpng but the source doesn't recognize I've got libpng installed. Don't apt and compiling from source work well together?

Is there anything wrong with using the pre-built packages?

http://packages.debian.org/unstable/games/wesnoth

O thanks! I think those would work just as well I just got linked to that site so I downloaded it there but if there's a debian package available it's better!
