Application tab gone. Where is Trash? Opening .HTML files

Three questions. I am teaching my 89 year-old mother to use a computer having purchased her an Asus Eee PC. She loves it!
Her Application Tab for Gmail has disappeared so I am wanting to put it back in the Webmail setup. Can you explain how to do that?
Is there a Trash bin where I can recover things? Also; An attachment has arrived with an email from the ISP, containing the monthly bill. However it is .HTML format and does not open in legible format. How can I open it and read the bill?
Thanks for y our help.

Margaret

I'm afraid that I don't really understand what you mean by the application tab for Gmail.
You can add a trash icon to the desktop if you wish. Create a new file called on the desktop that you save as Trash.desktop and paste this:
Quote:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Link
URL=trash:/
Encoding=UTF-8
Icon=trashcan_full
EmptyIcon=trashcan_empty
Name=Trash
As for the HTML file, HTML is best read with a browser. Right-click and select "Open with browser".

Disclaimer: I'm working from memory as my EeePC is at home, so some of this may not be 100% accurate!

You need to restore the simpleui.rc file. This is reasonably complicated to do. Could you not just save a Gmail bookmark in the Web browser? I know it's not a solution, but the alternative requires you to edit a system file which could remove the whole user interface.

Open the file manager (work tab), in the left hand column there should be an icon (towards the bottom of the list) called Trash.

If you need to save the file attachment first, right click on its icon in the opened email, then select "save as", and save it to "My Documents".

Then, in the File Manager (again, work tab), right click on the saved .html file (using the file manager), and select "open with", then choose Firefox if it's there. If it doesn't say Firefox, choose web browser or something along those lines.

Gmail icon

Thanks for your assistance with Trash and .html. I still hope to replace the missing Gmail icon on the desktop.

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/list:simpleui.rc

This link shows you how to restore the simpleui.rc file which is responsible for the layout of all the icons. As I said, there's some inherent risk involved, but the design of the EeePC allows you to restore it to its factory defaults quite easily. The best thing to do is to back up any files you have on the EeePC that are important (including emails, if you deem this necessary), so that should some problem occur, then you've not lost any files.

edit: There is an extremely active forum community at wiki.eeeuser.com which I recommend if you have problems; they may be able to offer an easier solution than I'm proposing.
