Application links?

I have OpenSuse 64bit 11.3. I am new to this, although dabbled with it in the past. I want to put applications in a box which is on the desktop that has other applications. With Windows its easy, but when I try and get a link to the applications in that box I give up. I can drag the application from the menu, but then it doesn't allow me to drag it into the box. Would love to know how to resolve this

Thanks
Tony

I think I have worked it out as it did work. I right clicked for adding application and properties came up. I typed in Opera and in the command field typed Opera%u. It did not have any icon after but I reopened the properties and the icons then cam into view. WOW what a long way round to do things! Nothing seems simple on this system

Which version of KDE do you have? You can add a Desktop Folder widget on your desktop. Select the directory to use in its setup. Then drag icons from the menu, and select copy here in the popup menu.

You can use the regular Desktop Folder view the same way.

I just wanted to say that unlike in Windows, desktop icons in Linux are not links.

They are called desktop files, and they contain information such as the programs name (in multiple languages), the path to the icon, the path to the executable, etc. in plain text format.

They look like icons instead of text files because Linux desktop standards-compliant file managers treat them specially compared to other files.
