application for file comments/descriptions

I installed an application that put several binaries in /usr/local/bin. I know what they are now, but might not after 6 months or a year. So I'd like to have some way to attach comments to a file so I'll know why it's there and won't delete it without knowing the consequences. And since this ability isn't built-in like in the IBM Workplace Shell, I have to find some other way. One way is to just put a Comments.txt file in each directory. I found an application called whatfor, and that might work. What other applications can I consider for this purpose?

hello,
I am not sure if helps more than what you have buty I use check-install for installing everything now, it makes and rpm, deb or slackware tarball and become part of you package database. http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/
