Apollon, giFT and FastTrack... Oh my

I am using SuSE 9.0 and I've been looking for a way to connect to the Kazaa (FastTrack) network. Apollon was suggested, and I really like the program but I cant get it to work.

First I used APT to install Apollon, which worked fine, but didn't install any plugins for giFT. Once I figured that out, I was able to download the OpenFT, Gnutella and FastTrack plugins with APT.

Now I have Gnutella and OpenFT working fine, but FastTrack is still not working at all, and because of that, when I run Apollon, all I get is errors.

I did as Apollon suggested and tried to run giFT from the command line and got possibly the most worthless error message ever:

*** GIFT-FATAL: unable to start 'FastTrack', no idea why (hopefully the protocol provided some info)
*** Often times more information can be found in the log file or with the -v command line switch.

I did a giFT -v and got this:

[02:11] FastTrack: fst_fasttrack.c:350(fst_giftcb_start): starting up
[02:11] *** GIFT-WARNING: FastTrack: Local file "/root/.giFT/FastTrack/FastTrack.conf" does not exist, copying default from "/usr/share/giFT/FastTrack/FastTrack.conf"
[02:11] *** GIFT-ERROR: unable to open /root/.giFT/FastTrack/FastTrack.conf (write): No such file or directory
[02:11] *** GIFT-ERROR: FastTrack: Unable to copy default file "/usr/share/giFT/FastTrack/FastTrack.conf"
[02:11] *** GIFT-ERROR: FastTrack: Unable to open fasttrack configuration, exiting plugin.

I checked in .giFT and there was no FastTrack directory as it says. But I don't know why, the install went fine, and I did ok with the other plugins (which I don't much care about). Can anybody offer any advice?

Thanks.

Had the same error myself. Create the directory "~/.giFT/FastTrack" and run giftd again. That cleared it up for me.

I_was just wondering, is this Apollon gives the same amount of results as Kazaa? Can you download everything, including movies?
The sole reason of my using windows is to connect to the Kazaa network, and I would like to avoid it if possible...

As far as I am aware you can download just the same things as on Kazaa... they both use the same network technologies on the same network.

Slightly off-topic: Gnutella. I enabled this in Apollon/gifT and now when I do a search for an MP3 file I get a load of non-MP3 files in the list. This is annoying. I do not particularly want to use two seperate clients if I can get away with it. Is there some configuration thing in the giftd.conf to get around this, or is it a bug? Cheers.

I was just about to check out giFT. I am on their website now taking a look at it. Lately though I have been using MLDonkey. It connects to multiple networks including Fasttrack so I'm not sure that its even worth the hassle. I have been questioning how well it actually works though, because I don't get near the results or bandwidth that I used to on Kazaa.

While I haven't seen this problem myself, if you've narrowed things down to indicate that this is a Gnutella problem, I'd just yank Gnutella out of the plugins list in giftd.conf.

plugins = OpenFT:Gnutella:FastTrack

Change that to "OpenFT:FastTrack" and that should remove any clutter Gnutella is throwing your way.

Yep, did that already. Doesn't really solve the problem, though, but thanks for the thought. It is sort of like cutting the foot off because you banged your little toe. I am quite happy to use either GTK-Gnutella or Appollon, but I would much prefer it if I could use the gnutella protocol in Apollon without it spewing a load of rubbish!

Hey ho... it's not like I download much anyway with a 56k connection

Cheers Nightwulf.

Red face Slackware 13 kernel 2.6-current

(sorry for bad english).I've using Slackware 13, gift version 0.11.8.1, and Gnutella 0.0.10.0. I having this SAME problem >

[22:20:08] Gnutella: try_some_nodes() returned 0. node list len=0
[22:20:08] Gnutella: No hosts to try. Looking in gwebcaches...
[22:20:08] Gnutella: gt_web_cache.c:583(check_dns_error): lookup failed on "none": Unknown host
[22:20:08] Gnutella: Retrying to connect to nodes...

i've tried to add this hosts (http://www.gnutellaforums.com/gnucle...ode-lists.html) to ~/.giFT/Gnutella/files , but didn't work, it appears they dont read the hosts OR no one of then is valid.

any help will be appreciated, thanks please help us, Appears to much people with this problem in the Google !!! an one "important" thing: ALL protocols still running, because all your respective default ports stay listening, look this at netstat -lnpt |grep (port number of protocol).

---EDITED---

I'm having connection problems with ALL networks, i'll be post your respective errors, for those have this program working nicely can help me i know that is an OLD post than i revived, but no one have any idea of may be wrong ? I'm using and adsl-pppoe connection, without bridge, hard-firewall or iptables or nothing intermediating the connection.

The problem isnt the Gnutella net, because i migrated to GTK_Gnutella. Just dont wanna give up !

Apparently, the solution is migrate to another p2p software. Thanks and sorry for the incovenient.

Dude, these days just use bittorrent. Most distro's come with a client pre-installed. Google "movie name torrent" and just pick the one with the most seeds and least leachers.
