APM with XFree?

To start things off, I tried searching, but couldn't yield any results I wanted, so here's the question/situation:

I know that APM works on my box because when don't have X running, the system goes into powersaving mode by spinning down and putting the monitor into power-saving mode. However, when I run X, I get into a strange situation:
Sometimes, if the computer's idle while X isn't running, and I issue startx, it goes directly into the computer's powersaving mode after X loads, then comes back about a minute later if I don't do anything to wake it. If it's already running X, the screensaver runs after a while, but after "n" amount of time, it keeps running the screen saver, and doesn't spin down or turn off the monitor. Also, when I issue hdparm -Y /dev/hda, with X either on or off, it doesn't matter, the hard drive spins down for about 30 seconds, then spins back up. I'm not sure if this is related at all, or if this is a separate issue.... Could anyone help out?
