Apache: SSI stopped working

I had apache (1.3.28) working perfectly on my computer, and suddenly lost my ability to use server-side includes. This appears to have happened when I added a line to my commonhttpd.conf (or whatever the filename is) to proxy a port for a program called mutella. I tried removing the line from the common conf and the problem still remains, the server side includes just dont display in the pages.
