Apache Problem

I posted this under the Newbie forum but after 24 hours, 44 views, and no replies I thought I would try it here.

I have read all the post I could find as well as the documentation on the Apache site but I cannot figure out why my server keeps refusing connections.

Whenever I try to connect to any file or folder in the tree I get:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /index.html on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The files and folder all have the correct permissions and everything looks in order in my httpd.conf file. I don't know why ftpuser is the service account but that shouldn't cause a problem. At least it didn't unti a few days ago. Is there anything else I need to look at. The server was running fine until a few days ago when it suddenly started refusing connections. From what I see in the config file it should accept connections from anyone from anywhere. Is there something I'm missing?

When you stop it then start it do you see anything in the logs?

Everything looks fine to me.

I renamed the error_log, restarted the server and here is the contents afterwards:

I would hazard a guess that one of the parent directories doesn't have +x permissions for apache, ftpuser in this case. Without +x, a user cannot enter a directory, though they may be able to get a listing of it's contents (with +r).

You are the man, it was the permissions on the /var directory. I have no idea how the permissions got changed. I suspect a nefarious act by a former contractor. I never thought to look that high up. A thousand thanks.
