Apache+Mysql+php

For a while now, i have been trying to setup a LAMPS server without no result what so ever...
I believe that it is because i just don't know what part of the server is the problem! (I mean ME is the big part... but something else is got to be a part of it too!!! something that i just don't get!)

If someone can guide me to a troubleshooting piece of HOWTO,
-HOWTO troubleshoot a LAMPS server... or anything close to that.
i would greatly appreciate.

I am really getting depressed with that challenge, actually, it is not a challenge anymore and i keep on hearing that some guy that put thoses servers up in less that an hour..., it as been months now that i see that box laying around the office collecting dust because i just can't get it running :^(
