apache is writing empty logs

I have a virtual hosts setup with apache logging to custom logs for each domain(theoretically). All log files are emtpty including the apache default access_log and error_log . I added
a log prefix of "<hit>" to the CustomLog line of the apache config.
Now my log files are full of "<hit>"'s. So it seems to be able to write to the log files, and it seems to have been triggered into logging something to the file. but the lines are empty.
any ideas?
thanks

Post your httpd.conf lines about log files and also an excerpt from your logs.
