Apache basic question

Third time lucky...

I ve set DocumentRoot & Directory so that a file
/usr/stuff/machines.htm

is loaded as default when I open up my apache server
http://proliant

How to I change it so that this page opens with
http://proliant/machines/ ?

please note, NOT http://proliant/machines.htm
also the machines.htm file CANNOT be moved.
I tried creating a ln but FC4 tells me it can't create a cross-drive link (/usr/stuff/ points to a raid array).

what I need is some kind of second apache folder pointing at /usr/stuff and to set DirectoryIndex = machines.htm

I m running apache 2 on fedora core 4.

Please help!!!
Thanks
Azhrarn

You can try to use mod_rewrite : http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/misc/rewriteguide.html
