apache and http://www.domainname.com

How can I mask my ipaddress as a .com name?
Instead of having people find my apache server with.
http://123.456.123.456/
i want it to be.
http://www.somename.com/
so people could just put
johndoewebsite.com
into the browser, and poof it goes to my site.

Register the name you want with a Registrar.
Point your name from the registrar to the DNS servers you have setup that translates your current server's IP to a name.
Setup your DNS server..

And poof, you have your own domain name............. ;)

you will have to deal with those that register DNS and keep in mind you will need to be on a static IP for that to work.

I have DHCP and host my own domain.. actually 3.. ;)

If you don't have a Static IP, you can use such services like www.zoneedit.com to use Dynamically issued IP's, etc. Its just much easier with a Static IP.

yes, for years ive used tzo.com for my dynamic DNS hosting.

quick question for you. who do you sujest for registering your DNS domain name with?

as soon as i recover from MDK10 killing my apache server thus losing all my code for my site i need to swap the DNS from my current host to my house.

have not looked into a registrer yet as i want to get the site up 100% before i move the DNS.
