Try either top or ps -aux and you'll see if httpd services are running. Usually by default if it is there should be around 5 running processes of it.

trickykid,

I have two httpd services running:

user pid %cpu %mem vsz rss tty stat start time
root 3967 0.0 1.4 4928 1868 ? S 8:35 0:0
wwwrun 3968 0.0 1.3 5084 1772 ? S 8:35 0:0

If I type localhost in the url on my internet browser it says the apache is running, but with rc.status on my SUSE 7.2 it says "running" in the command prompt
