Apache 2.0, I want to list dir contents & password protect...
I had a redhat 9.0 apache server going that listed directory contents for download and had a login using .htaccess and .htpassword files, worked great. I redid my server using Fedora core 3 and apache 2.0. I fugured i'd just copy over the old httpd.conf file, and the .ht files, and modify the path in .htaccess and in the httpd.conf file. But, that doesnt work. Instead of working, or even getting a login prompt, I just get an html Access Forbidden, error 403 page. I've been trying to figure this out for a week now and Im stuck. Please help!
working dir for apache "/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf"
dir trying to share "/mnt/public"
THANKS!!!!

we don't need your whole config file, you should start with apache's documentation... I'll give you a link which you can read to save myself the trouble of reading your config file --
they say you should configure the server to limit access in the conf file, if you have permission to edit that file, but if you don't, they allow the .ht* work-around.

Ok...im gonna forget the whole auth thing for now. I removed my .ht* files, and just wanna serve a public directory and files. Currently, when you go to the site, it displays the directories, but not the files. I verified there is public rights to view all content in this directory. I went over apache's documentation again, and it has instructions for auth, but no instructions that I saw to share a directory and contents. Any more thoughts?
Thanks,
Scrag

i'm not sure exactly what your problem is, perhaps this directive will help:
Code:
DirectoryIndex index.pl index.php index.shtml index.html
(modify as you see fit -- that's what i run)
