apache 2.0.55 & openssl 0.9.8 error?

i'm trying to compile httpd and i'm running into this error
Code:
.libs/htpasswd.o(.text+0xc4): In function `mkrecord':
/root/httpd-2.0.55/support/htpasswd.c:183: undefined reference to `crypt'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [htpasswd] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/httpd-2.0.55/support'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/httpd-2.0.55/support'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

the only thing I found on google was a person who had the same error, but had it fixed w/o explaining how. anyone have any idea about this?

oh and is this correct?
Code:
root@linuxbox:/usr/lib# ls -l libssl*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     34 2005-11-26 03:52 libssl.so -> /usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     34 2005-11-26 03:52 libssl.so.0 -> /usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     34 2005-11-26 03:52 libssl.so.0.9.8 -> /usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8*
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 134108 2005-09-05 10:22 libssl3.so*
root@linuxbox:/usr/lib# ls -l libcrypt*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 37 2005-11-26 03:52 libcrypto.so -> /usr/local/ssl/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8*

i'm running slackware. I tried dumping openssl 0.9.8 and use thier orignal package that came w/ slackware but I'm still having the same error message. oh and I did try using httpd-2.0.53 w/ no luck.

not sure what happened but I was updating openssl and httpd and all hell broke loose.

well, if it could be that not using the slackware provided package is causing you problems. At least for redhat, it's known that they do funny packaging with openssl and build other packages based on their openssl packaging and setup. Taking an openssl package directly from openssl will break a lot of the packages that were built using redhat's distribution of openssl. Again, I can't say if this is the case for slackware, but maybe it's better to use the slackware package even if it is a version behind or so.
