aoss doesn't work

I can't get 'aoss' to work. When running RealPlayer through it I simply get no sound. When running XMMS through it I get an error window saying it can't open the audio device, and to please check that the sound card is configured and nothing else is blocking it. It also gives the following message on the command line:
Quote:
** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Invalid argument
Both ALSA and OSS work fine on their own so I'm not sure what the problem might be. Any ideas?
