Anyone compile latest GAIM on Woody
 

I need to get GAIM setup to talk to my daughter in NY. And her aunt uses Yahoo so I need the latest version downloaded from their site. I was just wondering if anyone has compiled this on Debian 3.0 and does it give any problems? And if anyone has how does IM Imaging work with it?

why should it give you any problems? how about you try it first...

Well I'm presently at work so I'm sending out sounders to see if there is anything to watch out for when I DO try it tonight. I've already done searches on it that's why I'm asking for actual experiences.

I know that in gaim there was a yahoo bug a while back but it's long been fixed if that's what you're concrened about.

Exactly. I know the yahoo bug has been fixed. That is why I'm asking. Because on their site it mentions some people having problems compiling the new version due to glibc compatibility problems. And they only provide the source or rpms, no debs. So I wanted to know if there was anything specific to debian to watch out for with this new version.

OK now something I don't understand. I mean this is a Linux question. And I'm not posting a rediculous "which linux is best" or some other superfluous fluf question. I have a legitimate question on a specific issue and was asking for information. Isn't that what this site is for?

IF you have a specific reason to ask this then you should say so. like i said if everyone asked this question the site would be full of nothing but "Will program X compile on distribution Y?" there is no point asking unless you have reason to believe that this is not going to happen.

I thought I made that clear. There was a specific reason. I'd think 'compiling the latest version can give glibc dependency errors' is specific enough. And yes I was concerned that it would be a problem compiling as per the issues I've already stated. And how can that be a redundant question. I did a search and including my post this is only one of four question on gaim (not including the security notices) and only one other was related to my post and it was posted almost the same time.

And yes I was at Gaim's site. That's why I started this search for info in the first place. So yes there is a reason to ask this question, a legitimate and not redundant. And yes it very much seems like you are shooting down my question. For all the nonsense that we jabber about in general you'd think that a post such as mine wouldn't receive such a bite in the arse.

I might be listed as a newbie but I am far from it and would have expected, as a mod, that you wouldn't have such an acidic responce as "how bout you try it first..." I read the rules and I didn't see anywhere that requesting info/advice BEFORE installing a program is a problem. And this kind of repsonce is typical of what mdwatts was starting to spew over at JL and the very reason why I won't frequent that site. Fortunately I got my question answered by another post but this really doesn't sit well with me as I thought this site was holding to a higher standard.

Just to state how I feel on the topic. Asking about real world experiences is absolutely fine. Docs are sometimes junk and many bugs are not in the docs. A preliminary question can sometimes save an hour worth of work. The collective experiences of the members at this site is one of it's greatest strengths - it should be taken advantage of.

I should also add that before posting a question like this you should (as Cage47 did) do a search about the program in question first - if everybody asked about every program they were thinking of installing things would get out of hand rather quickly.

just grab the debian woody version of the yahoo messenger and install like so:

su
(enter your root password)
dpkg -i ymessenger_0.99.19-1_i386.deb

you can add it to your menu system like so:

vi /usr/lib/menu/yim

title="yim" command="/usr/bin/ymessenger" \
icon="/usr/share/pixmaps/gaim-menu.xpm"

I was thinking of doing that but they changed their format so that it broke the transfer to other clients including their own linux port. But it is fine in the winbloze version. Besides, I'm boycotting anything yahoo if I can. I can't do anything about my daughter's aunt using them. Actually logging on to setup an account is like eating a bare grape vine.
