any note taking software for linux??

Hello, I was wondering if any one knew of a note taking program that can be used with linux. I already have knotes installed on my computer but I need something with a few more features like being able to make bold font etc. to hightlight key words.
I am interested in this type of software because whenever I write research papers for school assignments I think it would be great to have virtual application to jot down facts from my sources instead of having to get a piece of paper and writing these things by hand.

I have heard of tomboy but I dont know if I can use it, my SUSE 9.3 installation DVD has it on there but I dont know if I can use it since I have KDE and Tomboy is listed as a GNOME application. Can I make this application work with KDE???

I welcome any suggestions,

Gnome applications run on kde without problems, and the other way round as well!

You should only need a few gtk libraries and bits of gtk#/mono to be installed for tomboy.
