any good OCR software out there
it has to be easy to install/compile and run, or maybe even better already in the software depositories. i am using ubuntu like everyone else so a .deb file will do fine also

Maybe you should try to use FineReader online?
It's beta version of online recognition service. You can recognize 50 pages a day just for your feedback.
Let me know how it goes, and if you found it helpful. I've heard it's quite good if images are decent quality!
