seems a lot simpler than going through dependency hell while trying to install from downloaded source files and using build-essentials and chkpkg to install. I would think?
My guess is it's a dependency issue. Without a readout of what's missing, I'm not sure where to direct you that (that wouldn't possibly result in packages getting broken.) Please see here.
I would just download version 0.98.7 from Debian's repositories and use that until Debian releases 0.99 for Wheezy.
